Polymer bank notes issuesd by the RBNZ

Polymer bank notes were introduced in 1999.

Why are our bank notes printed on polymer?

Bank notes printed on polymer (a type of plastic) have proven to be a lot more durable than the previous bank notes which were printed on paper/cotton. The window that was added to the polymer bank notes that we currently use also added to bank note security, helping to reduce the risk of counterfeiting.
